Spot the stars
I used to think it was only the tourists who got all excited about spotting celebrities when they came into town, but now it seems to have become a pastime that even us Londoners are getting involved in – even if it is a bit tongue in cheek! Some pals of mine were going out to celebrate a 30th birthday and were having a WAG night; tiny designer dresses, blonde hair and a venue list that read like something out of Hello! magazine. As the birthday girl herself said, all they needed was some coconut oil to make them smell like lap dancers, and they might even get a real life footballer buying them a bottle of champagne…
As it was, only one of the venues on their list even let them in! That was Mahiki in Mayfair, which I always thought was stretching the WAG tag a bit too much anyway. It tends to be more of a haunt for football media personalities than the players themselves; more Jamie Redknapp than his cousin, Frank Lampard. Not that I’d have turned down a spin on the dance floor with Jamie…
The rest of the bars and clubs that they tried to get into – Aquum, Chinawhites, Movida – all pegged them for what they were; a group of older women taking the piss out of their usual clientèle. They gave up in the end and came back to Borough to meet me, where they were very popular with the boys in our local. One of the guys had even had a trial with Dagenham and Redbridge, so I guess the girls sort of got their WAG night out after all!
