It is really difficult to find the right mix of summertime in the big smoke without pretending to be a tourist and spending a fortune. Last summer was cold and rainy and didn’t bring out the best of London’s outdoor options. Finding and loving a local lido is the key to becoming a healthy vibrant and happy person. A trip to a lido can be combined with an evening picnicking in the park with mates to make the best summer evening.

Lidos are open air pools. Many of the London lidos were built in the early 1900s. In 1937 Brockwell Park Lido opened and it is the premier lido in south east London. In the middle of a sunny day during school holidays it is absolutely packed with happy screaming children. There are, however, an equal amount of cool hipsters of the urban sort is you are looking for the possibility of meeting people and some fun social interaction. The lido is open until ten at night Monday to Friday then half nine on Saturdays and nine on Sundays. Pack a grown up picnic with sangria, tapas, a portable tape player and a large blanket to spread out. You can enjoy your picnic in Brockwell Park after your swim and invite any interesting people that you meet to join you for a chilled out evening under the stars.

With all of the activity it is best to move the party out of the lido for some quality socializing. Safety at the lido is of the utmost importance. I met a woman in the park who had recently been travelling and staying at motels in the United States. Outdoor pools are much more common there than the are in the UK, but the standards are not nearly as high. She had a terrible reaction to the chemicals and was trying to get accident USA compensation for the terrible rashes she suffered. British pools are much safer and cleaner, though many lidos have closed because of the difficulty of keeping them open at the highest standard. Brockwell Park lido was refurbished in 2007 and is now run in partnership with a charity called Fusion. This helps with the ongoing care and maintenance of the lido as well as providing an abundance of other health and fitness activities. If pilates seems too serious, you can always go for a dance or zuumba class. It is a whole new way to look at night life.
